Organized by Tokyo University of the Arts; The Yomiuri Shimbun
In 2018 spring, Tokyo University of the Arts and the Yomiuri Shimbun will hold an exhibition titled “Masterpieces of Beautiful Women Paintings”. This exhibition will showcase more than 50 beautiful women paintings (bijinga) from the collection of Tokyo University of the Arts and other institutions in Japan. This exhibition also commemorates the accomplishment of conservation project of “Jo-no-mai (Dance Performed in Noh Play)” by Shoen Uemura which is a masterpiece of beautiful women paintings in the modern period and it will be displayed for the first time after its restoration.
Tracing the roots of beautiful women paintings in genre paintings and ukiyo-e in the Edo period, this exhibition oversees how beautiful women paintings expanded in Tokyo and western Japan from late 19th century to early 20th century. The exhibition also introduces masterpieces by notable painters such as Kiyokata Kaburaki, Keigetus Kikuchi and Bausen Tsuchida with other artists, Seien Shima, Shoen Ikeda (both two are called “san-en” with Shoen Uemura) and graduates of Tokyo University of the Arts.
