The Universtiy Art Museum presents the Geidai Collection Exhibition to introduce the art collection of Tokyo University of the Arts. The collection, whose formation began with the establishment of Tokyo Fine Art School 120 years ago, contains such diverse works as antique arts, modern Japanese-style paintings, Western-style paintings, prints, sculptures and crafts, as well as works by the University's previous teachers and students, consisting of over 29,000 items in total, including 22 designated important cultural properties.

The spring-season Geidai Collection Exhibition held from April is a regular showcase of some of the major works from this collection. Last academic year, the Museum organized such special exhibitions as Western-style Japanese painters and Paris and Okakura Tenshin: The Course of Art Education to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the founding of the University, and showcased numbers of the major works from the collection, consequently reconfirming its historical importance. There are many works in the collection, however, which are recognized as major pieces but have rarely had opportunities to be exhibited.

Therefore, in order to facilitate the use of art works and documents in the collection, this Geidai Collection Exhibition has selected those that had not been exhibited in recent years, and shows them along with some major works of antique arts, modern Japanese-style paintings, Western-style painting, sculpture, crafts and design. Especially, antique arts, modern Japanese-style paintings and drawings are exhibited in three session periods so visitors to the exhibition can see as many works as possible.

In addition, this Geidai Collection Exhibition has two special sections:

1. "Tokyo Fine Art School and Bauhaus"
As a related project to BAUHAUS experience, dessau, an exhibition which is held at the Museum nearly simultaneously (April 26 - July 21), this section showcases a selection of graduation works of Tokyo Fine Art School's Department of Zuan ["Design"] (today's Department of Design and Department of Architecture) from Taisho and early Showa periods, so that the influence of Bauhaus in the School can be examined.

2. "KIKUCHI Kazuo and His Legacy"
The year 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of KIKUCHI Kazuo (1908 - 1985), the former professor of sculpture at the University. This section focuses on works by KIKUCHI Kazuo and some of the other sculptors related to him in the Museum collection.

Through the over 100 works exhibited, including those exhibited in the above mentioned two special sections, we hope you will enjoy a variety of works from the "Geidai collection" which has come to be formed since the founding times of the University.
