In the history of the ceramics course at Tokyo University of the Arts, working with porcelain with overglaze colors has been a strong tradition since the time when Yoshimichi Fujimoto was teaching at the University. Fujimoto was a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property in the field of overglaze painting techniques on porcelain and Makoto Toyofuku received guidance from him. He learned traditional skills and developed a new field of contemporary expression in overglaze painting.
Toyofuku was admitted to the Department of Crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1973 and majored in ceramics. After he graduated from the graduate school, Toyofuku started his teaching career at his alma mater and consecutively held the posts of adjunct instructor, assistant, and associate professor. He has been appointed as a professor since 2007, and he will leave his position at the end of March 2021. In commemoration of the retirement of Professor Toyofuku, this special solo-show will be held. This exhibition will celebrate his unique and highly acclaimed artworks including 'decoration with silver and glaze'. We hope you take this opportunity to view the current state of tradition in the art of porcelain with overglaze colors at Tokyo University of the Arts.
