It shows a total of more than 600 art works selected from the collections focusing on prewar to postwar objects of these three museums, and also from collections of domestic museums and private collections. It is held at two places, namely the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and the Museumof Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
The exhibition consists of Japanese modern and contemporary paintings made during the 100 years from the end of the 19th century selected by methodology which is 1) not comprehensive but selective, 2) not logical but sensual, 3) not so chronological but biographical. The part at The University Art Museum, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music focuses on the starting point of modern aesthetics in Japan, and also paintings with themes of landscapes and still life. The part at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo introduces paintings mainly of the prewar and postwar periods, and paintings of human figure themes.
